Ulster's Paddy Wallace gets his break in the Churchill Cup |
Paddy Wallace will be at fly-half when Ireland A open up their Churchill Cup campaign against the US Eagles in Santa Clara on Saturday (2200 BST). Wallace returns from the wilderness on a side led by Leicester flanker Shane Jennings and contains new Ulster recruit Tom Court at tight-head.
Andy Maxwell makes his debut at this level on the left wing with fellow Ulster player Matt McCullough at lock.
Leinster's Rob Kearney is at full-back with Munster's Tomas O'Leary at pivot.
National coach Eddie O'Sullivan, along with the Ireland A management team of Michael Bradley, Mark McCall and Allen Clarke, all had a say in selection.
O'Sullivan was always a big fan of Wallace who he believed had the talent to step onto the full international side.
The 26-year-old had been in the wilderness for most of last season, but made a telling return to action in Ulster's final push for the Celtic League title.
Playing in the shadow of David Humphreys at Ulster, Wallace now he gets another big opportunity to make that final breakthrough into the international scene.
Selectors have made up a mix and match side with the choice of winger Kearney at full-back with Stephen Keogh and Maxwell on the wings and Connacht's and David Quinlan in midfield.
The choice of Queenslander Court up front will raise a few eyebrows. He arrived in the province a few months ago, and has played one game for the Ulster A game before heading States-side.
Also making his Ireland A debut is Connacht flanker John Muldoon.
"We are keen to have a look at a number of player and John Hearty and John Muldoon are just two," said tour manager Joe Miles.
"John had a good season for Connacht so we want to see him at the next level."
