South Africa full-back Percy Montgomery kicked a last-gasp penalty that sealed victory over a World XV at Ellis Park. The shadow Springbok side led 15-11 at the break with Montgomery kicking five penalties while World XV skipper Justin Marshall crossed for the visitors.
Fiji's Isa Nacewa added another just after the break but South Africa, despite having AJ Venter sin-binned, kept in touch with a series of kicks.
And with the game locked at 27-27, Montgomery fired over from close range.
The flow of the game was not helped by the performance of retiring South African referee Tappe Henning, who blew for 25 penalties.
"There were so many penalties, neither team was able to get into a pattern," said Marshall.
The Springboks begin their summer campaign against Scotland next Saturday and coach Jake White will be concerned that his side were unable to cross the try-line.
"I wasn't happy with the performance, but it just shows how important experience is at this level," he said.
"The World side played well though and they were here to win, not entertain."
