Johnson said his side lacked the killer touch |
Wales caretaker coach Scott Johnson says his team's intent was right against Italy but not the execution. "Italy showed great endeavour as did we, but there's no doubt we should have put the game to bed first half," said Johnson after the 18-18 Cardiff draw.
"That's how we play, intent was good, but we didn't execute well. I'd rather that than see a team limping through.
"It's not for me to say whether Mike Ruddock leaving was why we've performed like this, I'm out to coach the side."
Johnson seemed to drop a broad hint that he would be leaving Wales at the end of the Six Nations.
"I'm here for a short time and I'll try to do my best to get the best out of the boys," he told BBC Sport, before back-tracking and repeating his familiar message that he will tell people his decision at the appropriate time.
"We have to acknowledge that this is where the team is at this moment in time, but there's no denying we need to be looking at that drawing board.
"We have exposed some kids that would not have got that exposure if it wasn't for injuries.
"I'm a 'half-full' man and come 2007 we should have some good depth.
"Hats off to Italy, but a draw does just feel like kissing your mother-in-law."
