Ohata scored eight tries in one match against Chinese Taipei |
Japan winger Daisuke Ohata broke Australian legend David Campese's world record for Test tries on Sunday with a hat-trick in a 32-7 win over Georgia. Ohata's feat took his tally to 65, in only his 55th Test, to surpass Campese's mark of 64, from 101 Tests.
However, unlike Campese's, only around a quarter of Ohata's tries have come against major rugby-playing nations.
"I doubt (Campese) would have expected a Japanese player to break his record," said the 30-year-old Ohata.
"There was a weird kind of pressure on me to do it, so I'm happy to get it done."

The Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) presented Ohata with a gold-striped shirt after the match to mark his achievement. Ohata's first try came in the 36th minute when he touched down after following up a chip through from Yuta Imamura.
He equalled Campese's total just before the hour mark when he joined a rolling maul five metres out and was pushed over by the Japanese pack.
Ohata then broke the record deep into injury time when he burst clear following a line-out close to the Georgia line.
"In a way I feel a bit sorry about breaking Campese's record," Ohata added. "But it's great to break it just before the soccer World Cup starts."
