Scotland-England player ratings | SCOTLAND: Hugo Southwell - 8: Solid in defence, his kicking at the start of the second half to push England back as they looked to establish their authority was prodigious. Chris Paterson - 9: He may not have had much chance to run with the ball but his nerveless kicking under huge pressure secured victory for Scotland. Marcus Di Rollo - 7: Tackled his heart out against the muscular English runners as the Scottish midfield stood up to the challenge magnificently. Andrew Henderson - 7: The big Scottish centre showed the odd glimpse of his ability to offload but it was his solid defence which mattered on Saturday. Sean Lamont - 7: Lamont had few chances to shine with the ball in hand but he never shirked a tackle and was an important part of the powerful Scottish defence. Dan Parks - 7: England rarely managed to expose his lightweight defence and he marshalled the Scots well with some good kicking. Mike Blair - 7: Always sharp, his service to Parks was reliable and he was another who was happy to put his body on the line. Gavin Kerr - 6: The Scottish front row was put under huge pressure, notably at the end of the first half, but Kerr managed to hold his own. Dougie Hall - 6: The line-out was once again rocky for the Scots on occasion, but in the tight Hall kept on going against the massive English front row. Bruce Douglas - 6: Douglas was given a fierce examination by Andrew Sheridan at the end of the first half and just about managed to keep things under control, despite giving away a couple of penalties. Scott MacLeod - 6: Scotland struggled in the line-outs and clearly missed the suspended Scot Murray, but MacLeod held his own. Alastair Kellock - 7: The rangy second-row put himself about with gusto and although the line-out was not perfect he showed he has a bright future. Jason White - 9: The Scottish captain was simply magnificent. He was at the heart of the mighty Scottish defence and worked himself to exhaustion. Allister Hogg - 8: Hogg was only denied a try by an all-encompassing Sheridan tackle and he was another Scot to put his body on the line time after time. Simon Taylor - 8: As with the rest of the Scottish back-row Taylor had an immense game and although he had few chances to show his ball skills he had plenty of opportunity to hurl himself into the fray. REPLACEMENTS: Ross Ford - 7: The youngster stood up well after replacing Hall, including surviving a scrum deep in Scottish territory as soon as he came on. Craig Smith - 6: Kept things solid for the Scots after replacing Douglas. Nathan Hines - 7: Added ballast on his return to the international scene when he replaced MacLeod. Chris Cusiter - 6: Combative presence replacing Blair and linked well with Ross. Gordon Ross - 7: Kept Scots going forward after replacing Parks in the tight closing stages. Simon Webster came on too late to make an impact while Jon Petrie did not feature.
ENGLAND: Josh Lewsey - 7: Was England's most dangerous runner and made some incisive breaks, but dropping a high ball early in the second half halted England's momentum. Mark Cueto - 6: Always keen to look for work but was well marshalled by the Scottish defence and lacked the spark to open up the hosts. Jamie Noon - 6: Ran hard and true and defended well but it was not enough on a day where conditions hampered the backs. Mike Tindall - 5: Big and powerful on the crash ball but his inability to utilise overlaps must be a concern for England. Ben Cohen - 5: Will have nightmares about dropping the ball with the Scottish line at his mercy near the end of the first half. Charlie Hodgson - 7: Only missed one kick at goal all day but some of his kicking out of hand was poor and he will have better days. Harry Ellis - 6: There is no doubt about his appetite for the fray and made one searing break up the touchline, but his service remains unreliable under pressure. Andrew Sheridan - 7: There is a feeling there is more to come and he never fully got the upper hand in the scrums, but his cover tackle on Hogg would have pleased a full-back. Steve Thompson - 7: Solid and workmanlike around the park, but his throwing at the line-out was well-nigh perfect, with just one loss out of 20. Julian White - 6: Never did the damage expected in the scrums but did his best to get involved around the field. Steve Borthwick - 7: Was part of a dominant England line-out and put himself about in the loose but was not powerful enough to make a real difference. Danny Grewcock - 6: His line-out work was good but his silly sin-binning suggests indiscipline will always be a part of his game. Joe Worsley - 6: Had the odd moment but was out played by the inspirational White and suffered in comparison. Lewis Moody - 7: Enthusiasm personified but did not have the influence he would have liked as Scotland took control in the second half. Martin Corry - 6: Corry gave it his all but there is no doubt the Scottish back row out-played their English counterparts. Was replaced in the second half by Lawrence Dallaglio. REPLACEMENTS: Perry Freshwater - 6: The Perpignan prop was a brief blood replacement for loose-head Sheridan and did not have enough time to make a real impression. Simon Shaw - 6: The 6ft 9in Wasps seocnd row came on too late to make an impact. Lawrence Dallaglio - 6: Replaced captain Corry and had one good run but could not halt Scotland's momentum. Matt Dawson - 6: Competent when he replaced Ellis at scrum-half but could not change the course of the game. Tom Voyce, Andy Goode and George Chuter did not feature. Back to top
