Chris Cusiter column

Chris Cusiter
Scotland scrum-half

The overriding feeling following the defeat by Wales was one of pride in our performance, having played for so long with only 14 men.

It was a massive effort from everyone involved and the guys showed a lot of pride in the jersey in what were very tough circumstances after Scott Murray was sent off.

I know he's not a dirty player and I believe the kick was accidental, but I'm sure the management will have another look at the incident.

The referee called it as he saw it though, and it was very tough after that - line-outs had to be adjusted, we had to be even better organised and everyone worked very hard.

There was certainly no doubting the passion on show but we struggled to contain Wales at times.

Having said that, a lot of the rugby we played was good, even though the execution wasn't always quite right.

I thought we did well to come back into the game and we finished quite strongly, although I don't think we were ever going to win at that stage and Wales were deserving of their victory.

They play at such a pace but we were still in the game until their third try, which was a killer blow for us.

When Wales got their tails up and started throwing the ball about, it made it even harder for us.

But I thought we deserved to put the tries on the board and on another day we might have scored earlier and changed the game.

Next week we'll look at things that went wrong but, knowing Frank Hadden, he will want to accentuate the positives.

It's important to keep faith in what we're doing because I think people can see we're moving in the right direction.

It's good to get a two-week break before the England game because it's tough playing games back-to-back, particularly as the Six Nations is so intense.

So the break will be welcomed by everyone. It will let us freshen up and hit England running.

It's a home match and a huge challenge, but then so was France and we won that match.

We're playing at Murrayfield and it will help to have that huge crowd behind us.

Obviously, I'd love to start that game but you have to look after what you can control.

Selection is for the coach and I'll keep working hard but I know Mike Blair's been playing well.

I hope the chance to start will come but it's a squad game, as we've seen over the last two games, and I've been getting game time so I'm grateful for that.
