Thomas injury worry strikes Wales
Wales captain Gareth Thomas

Wales captain Gareth Thomas has given coach Mike Ruddock a major scare less than two weeks before the Six Nations.

Thomas, 31, aggravated a long-standing knee problem in Toulouse's Heineken Cup win over the Scarlets on Saturday.

He told BBC Sport: "I had a problem when I tried to turn and push off, and I felt it give way. But once I started jogging it wasn't too bad.

"I'm staying in Wales this week so I'll get some good treatment from the Wales physio and get fit for Saturday."

While the Welsh-based players who will face England in the Six Nations opener on 4 February will be rested next weekend, Thomas expects to be involved in Toulouse's league match with Pau.

Wales coach Mike Ruddock has pleaded with the French club not to take any risks with his inspirational captain, but Thomas is willing to play despite the risk of further knee problems.

"It doesn't bother me," said Thomas, whose knee was heavily strapped in Saturday's match at Stradey Park.

"The reason I put my boots on to train during the week is to play at the end of the week.

"The carrot dangling for me is to get into the [Toulouse] team. With the squad we've got, if you're picked you've got to go out there and play your best otherwise somebody equally as good will take your place."

Before retuning to France, Thomas will meet up with the rest of Wales' 30-man Six Nations squad on Sunday.

He said: "We've got a lot of things to iron out before the real work starts the week before the England game.

"This week is a case of getting everyone together again, having a bit of fun, make the new guys feel welcome and get that squad spirit going again."
