Cueto is keen to make the most of his Lions opportunity |
Sale winger Mark Cueto is hoping he can make a big impact after being named in the Lions team for their opener against Bay of Plenty. "It makes no difference whether I was in the original squad or not. I am here now and here to do a job," said Cueto, who replaced the injured Iain Balshaw.
"To get that first chance to play in the first game is a big challenge for me and I am looking forward to it.
"I am looking for an all-round decent performance and a try would be nice."
Cueto was unlucky not to have been named in the initial squad after scoring eight tries in eight internationals for England this season.
But he knows he will have to do more than score points to have a chance of getting a place in the Test side.
"Your job as a winger is to score tries, but there is a lot more to the game than that; defence, position around the field. There is all manner of things to be on top of," he said.
Hooker Gordon Bulloch insisted that it will be important for the tourists to start off the tour with a victory next Saturday.
"We have been watching a few tapes of what they have been doing in the National Provincial Competition last year. They will be gearing up to play us as their one big game this season so it will be very difficult," he said of Bay of Plenty.
"They will try and compete on a lot of our ball and it is up to ourselves to get some good set-piece ball for our backs.
"Everyone is looking towards that first Test but it is important we get the results right and the Test match selection will look after itself."
