Gollings' record could not inspire England to further success |
England were knocked out of the semi-finals of the South Africa Sevens after losing out to eventual winners Fiji 28-22. Ben Gollings became the top try scorer in IRB Sevens history during the match but it was not enough to put England into the final in George.
The Fijians gained revenge for their defeat to England in the final of the Dubai Sevens last week.
They then went on to defeat Argentina 21-19 in the final.
England's bid for a place in that final was severely dented when captain Simon Amor was sin-binned for dissent late in the first half.
Before that, though, Gollings put his side ahead in the second minute, to score his 122nd try and one more than previous record holder Argentina's Santiago Gomez Cora.
But Fiji hit back with scores of their own from William Ryder and Jone Daunivucu.
It helped Fiji to a 21-10 lead England never looked likely to erase despite stunning solo efforts from Mathew Tait and Andrew Vilk.
