Josh Lewsey's column

By Josh Lewsey
England full-back

The last month has been a very enjoyable one and it would have been nice to finish it on a high with a real key-note performance.

Unfortunately we didn't do that against Samoa but we still won and we won well.

As you get older you realise there are some other things in life and you need to look at things with a bit of perspective.

Tom Voyce crosses for one of his two England tries
'Voycey' took some big steps forward and showed he can deliver on the big stage
Without being too cheesey, Rome wasn't built in a day and we are a lot further ahead now as a team than we were a month ago.

We beat Australia well, we lost narrowly to the best team in the world in New Zealand - who have stuffed every other side out of sight - and even having played badly, we beat Samoa by 40 points.

We have showed on our day we can match anyone.

The issue we have to address is what we do when we have the ball.

If we rectify that we will take a big step, and the conviction is certainly there to go and put it right.

The biggest positive of the autumn is that this England squad gets on very well with each other and there is a real sense of team unity, which you saw in the incident which saw Lewis Moody sent off.

Lewis was gutted afterwards. He was feeling awful, and being sent off at Twickenham is obviously very disappointing, but he was backing someone up on his team.

These things happen on a rugby field, it is part and parcel of the game, and what went on between him and Tuilagi was probably like a training day at Leicester.

The forwards have been magnificent but we need to interact more as a team
But there were positives to take out of the game and Tom Voyce will probably be even more vocal than usual at Wasps this week after getting a couple of tries.

I am delighted for him because he has worked very hard for his spot and he took some big steps forward and showed he can deliver on the big stage.

It was interesting that when he went to full-back he didn't physically touch the ball afterwards.

That was the way I felt - very frustrated. The conviction to mix the game up was certainly there but some of the execution and decision-making was missing.

We are fully aware we need to work very hard on that and put it right for the Six Nations.

We have a good base to go on to bigger and better things
We were guilty of too many unforced errors and some of our passing was poor.

The forwards have been magnificent but we need to interact more as a team, and we know we are not there yet.

It was almost there against New Zealand but we didn't quite have the cutting edge.

But we know where we want to get to, and we have a good base to go on to bigger and better things.

Right now I am enjoying a couple of days away from rugby. I will spend some time with the dogs and get away from it so I come back fresh.

It's my 29th birthday this week so I am getting a bit long in the tooth.

I don't expect there'll be big celebrations as I'll be going back to Wasps and trying to work on my game.

But I might have a pint or two.
