South Africa captain Jon Smit received a six-week ban on Tuesday for striking France skipper Jerome Thion in the 26-20 defeat last Saturday. Thion, who suffered a fractured larynx after being elbowed in the throat by Smit, will leave hospital on Wednesday but is likely to be out for six weeks.
The Springbok hooker's suspension will commence on 14 January, the opening day of the new season in South Africa.
He has the right of appeal but said he had no complaints about the hearing.
"I received a fair hearing and want to wish Jerome a speedy recovery," said the 27-year-old, who will miss Three Super 14 matches for the Sharks.
His ban was imposed by the International Rugby Board's judicial officer for the match, Denis Wheelahan and he had been cited by the independent citing commissioner, David Gray of New Zealand. The touch judge reported the incident, in the 13th minute, to the referee, who awarded France a penalty which Jean-Baptiste Elissalde landed.
Thion left the field 10 minutes later, replaced by Gregory Lamboley.
Smit had been due to appear before a disciplinary committee in Paris on Sunday but that was postponed until Tuesday to enable South Africa's management to prepare a defence.
Andy Marinos, manager for all South African teams said that Smit had been badly affected by the episode.
"John has been very upset by the incident and he wishes him (Thion) a quick recovery. It has never been his intention to hurt someone on the pitch."
Marinos said Smit phoned to Thion to wish him 'good luck' and a quick recovery.
"He has also spoken to Marcel Martin (president of his French team, Biarritz)", he added.
Another Springbok official Nick Usiskin said Smit had not intended harming Thion.
"It is important to note the contribution John has made to world rugby, both as player and as a captain," said Usiskin, referring to the range of punishment capable of being imposed being from two weeks to a year.
"The judge who presided over the proceedings certainly took this into account, as well as the outstanding character of John when he determined the period of sanction.
"Smitsaid he never intended to harm the player, French skipper Jerome Thion, in any way. Although disappointed with the suspension, he however accepts the decision."
