Ruddock looks on the bright side
Wales coach Mike Ruddock
Wales coach Mike Ruddock put on a brave face after watching his side avoid an embarrassing loss to Fiji by one point.

"We did a lot of things better than we did (in the 41-3 loss to new Zealand) last week," Ruddock told BBC Wales.

"Last week we were criticised for not getting any possession, this week we had tonnes of possession.

"Our scrum was a massive weapon, we drove them back on numerous occasions culminating in a pushover try, and our lineout was accurate."

Yet despite the glut of ball, Wales squandered good positions time and again.

Half-backs Gareth Cooper and Nick Robinson were lacklustre, despite a couple of impressive darts from Cooper and Robinson's late drop-goal to rescue the result.

"Our shape was there but our accuracy let us down," Ruddock added.

"I'm a professional coach and I deal in results: we got a result here today.

"We showed determination and a will to win that you need when sometimes things aren't going your way.

I don't feel robbed... we gave away a lot of penalties
Fiji coach Wayne Pivac

"We can't take anything away from Fiji... but there were a lot of youngsters on that field and they came through the test - that's what a Test match is."

Fiji coach Wayne Pivac was sorry the win had slipped through their grasp, but conceded that Wales had the edge.

"I don't feel robbed. The Welsh created a couple of chances and although it was a game we could have potentially won, we gave away a lot of penalties," Pivac said.

"But the try we scored showed that we could score from anywhere on the field, and Wales will not get the dominance they got in the scrum against us when they play South Africa.

"The South Africans will go out and have a go at them in the pack. South Africa are very good at putting the pressure on teams through their forwards."

Fiji captain Moses Rauluni added: "I thought we were well up for the game and sometimes we thought we had the crowd on our side, but we have to move on now."
