Wales have seven full internationals in their provisional 23-man squad for the Sevens competition at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne (15-26 March). Gareth Wyatt, Jamie Ringer and Andrew Williams are among those who are in contention for the final 12-man squad.
Said coach Dai Rees: "There is a mix of experience Seven players and exciting young talent who will gain a huge amount from this experience."
Wales have been drawn in Group A with holders New Zealand, Kenya and Namibia.
The 16-team Sevens competition will be held in Melbourne's Telstra Dome on 15 and 16 March.
Said Welsh Rugby Union performance manager Mostyn Richards: "We have worked closely with the four regions and the national team management in the selection of the preliminary group of players.
"Despite the Games taking place during the Six Nations Championship, we are confident of taking a highly competitive team."
Wales will compete in the Hong Kong Sevens tournament on their way home from Australia, and a squad will also be sent to International Rugby Board's tournaments in Dubai (1-2 December) and Georgetown (9-10 December).
