Jamie Noon scored a hat-trick as the world champions ended a difficult season on a high.

England raced into a 26-3 lead approaching half-time, only for Scotland to hit back with three tries of their own.

But England upped the pace late on and ran in seven tries in all, with Charlie Hodgson adding four conversions.

England missed the chance to take the lead when Hodgson pushed a very kickable penalty well wide after 10 minutes.

But the Sale fly-half redeemed himself a couple of minutes later with a sublime break and offload to Noon, who cantered over for a converted try under the posts

Chris Paterson, who had a fine game, missed his first shot at goal for Scotland.

But he landed his second after 20 minutes, only for the Scottish defence to open up far too easily to gift Noon his second try.

Noon burst through the Scottish line before outpacing the cover and blasting through Paterson's attempted tackle for a fine individual score, which Hodgson converted.

Joe Worsley then stretched over from Mark Cueto's fine pass after Hodgson had made the initial inroads with a lovely weaving break deep into Scottish territory.

Hodgson missed the conversion from the right touchline but was on target when Josh Lewsey scorched over after a flowing move from the English backs.

Sean Lamont grabbed a try for Scotland, converted by Paterson, on the stroke of half-time and the Scots drew first blood after the break when Andy Craig crossed after brilliant work by Paterson.

The full-back made the try with a marvellous run and kick ahead and he added the extras to make it 26-17, only for England to strike back immediately.

Ollie Smith, on for the injured Iain Balshaw, produced a superb offload in the tackle and Harry Ellis pounced for his first England try, with Hodgson converting from the touchline.

Ellis then found out how cruel international rugby can be when Simon Taylor intercepted his pass and cantered over for an unconverted score.

Noon completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes to go and Cueto continued his try-a-game scoring ratio as he rounded things off with England's seventh try.
