Ruddock wary of threat from Irish

Wales coach Mike Ruddock has warned that a wounded Ireland side will make it very difficult for Wales to win their first Grand Slam since 1978.

Wales beat Scotland 46-22 at the weekend while France ended Ireland's Grand Slam chances with a 26-19 win.

The two sides meet in Cardiff on Saturday and Ruddock said: "Ireland are always going to be very dangerous.

"There's a huge amount of confidence in the camp but a huge amount of awareness of the dangers Ireland will bring."

Ruddock insisted that Ireland's defeat by France would make them even harder to defeat on Saturday.

"There is huge quality in the Ireland team and they are the current Triple Crown holders (having beaten all the home nations last year) and will be more dangerous now they have lost to France," said Ruddock.

"They can still go for the championship, they can still go for the Triple Crown. They have a lot to motivate them and they will be very difficult to beat.

"But as ever we will sit down and look at how we are going to attack them and hopefully we will have enough to do so in Cardiff.

"We cannot ease off and spend too much time congratulating each other until we do our homework and get our preparation right to get our performance right for next week."

Wales' Grand Slam chances were endorsed by Scotland coach Matt Williams, who described them as the best side his team had faced this championship.

"Their passing out of hand, their continuity, their support play and desire to get there is first rate," said Williams.

"Ireland won't give them the latitude that we gave them in the first half but if they play like they did yesterday they will be very hard to stop."

  • Wales are top of the Six Nations table and the only team capable of winning the Grand Slam (defeating all five opponents in the tournament).

The Irish can still win the Six Nations Championship - but only if they beat Wales in Cardiff on Saturday with a points difference of more than 13 points.

France still have a slim chance of the title. If Ireland beat Wales by one point then France would need to beat Italy by 53 points.
