Luger last played for England in the 2003 World Cup quarter-final |
Dan Luger is to return to the international scene as a member of England's Sevens training squad. The World Cup-winning wing secured an early release from club side Perpignan in June and has been recovering from knee surgery at home in Croatia.
Luger, 30, is eyeing the World Sevens series opener in Dubai in December.
"I'd love to be selected for Dubai, but I realise I won't have played that much. I'll need to persuade Mike [coach Mike Friday] to pick me," he said.
"I have had a bit of time out since a knee operation in the summer, and I have been working hard to rebuild my fitness levels.
"One of the best things about not being with a club full time is that I have so much more time to spend on my fitness and training, and I will hopefully end up a much fitter player.
"I have a local rugby club in Split which is a pretty good standard, and I have got involved with them.
"The Croatia national team are keen on developing their sevens side and are taking it much more seriously this season, and I will be doing some coaching with them."
Luger, whose father is Croatian, scored 24 tries in 38 Tests for England and toured Australia with the 2001 Lions.
The former Harlequins and Saracens star last represented his country in the 2003 World Cup quarter-final victory over Wales.
