Thomas: An immense comeback

By Gareth Thomas
Wales captain and leading try scorer

What a superb win over France - but I had forgotten how nerve racking it is to watch from the stands!

Michael Owen and Jonathon Thomas celebrate the win over France in Paris
I was proud to be part of the victory in Paris and it's another great memory I'll take away
It was the first international for a while that I've been forced to come off with a injury, but it was superb to watch the effort and commitment of the boys.

The second half performance was absolutely immense and summed up what this squad of players is all about.

It was great to soak in the atmosphere and see the fans going ballistic and urging the players on.

Those final few minutes were terrible to watch, though.

The clock had stopped at 80 minutes and yet the referee was still playing on.

And then when Stephen Jones kicked it over the dead ball line at the end, I thought the referee was going to award France a scrum.

But thankfully he blew that whistle and it was just pure elation.

Obviously, there was a tinge of sadness for me coming off at half-time with a broken thumb, but I've emphasised before that this team is not about individuals.

There is not one man who drives this team forward. It's all about a bunch of boys working together.

I was proud to be part of the victory in Paris and it's another great memory I'll take away from being with a great bunch of boys.

Playing again in the championship is not a realistic goal for me, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm still very much part of this team.

I intend to travel up to Scotland for our next match and I'll obviously be at the Millennium Stadium when Ireland come to Cardiff for the last game of the championship.

I will do everything I can to help the guys prepare.

I've been told to expect to be out for at least eight weeks. I'll have an operation on Monday to have a plate and screws put in my thumb and I'll just take it from there.

I'm looking at things positively and I'll do everything I can to get myself back playing and training with these guys again.

The big aim is to be back to finish the season with Toulouse.

We've got a big game against Biarritz this weekend so it's disappointing not to be involved in that.

But the club knows I gave nothing but 100% against France - sometimes you walk off the pitch at the end, sometimes you get carried off. That's the way rugby is.

We had a great reception from the fans when he arrived back at the airport on Sunday morning.

It was great to see a lot of kids there. People want to come to see us, speak to us and give their best wishes.

The boys are happy to give time to the fans because we know that they are the people that make us perform the way we do.

We know we've still got a lot of work to do, but hopefully we can give the fans even more reason to celebrate.
