Goode called into England squad

Leicester fly-half Andy Goode has been called into a 30-man England squad to train next week for the RBS Six Nations clash with Ireland in Dublin.

The 24-year-old is rewarded for his strong display in the England A team's victory over France A last Friday.

"Andy has been knocking on the door with his good form for Leicester and I felt he impressed last week in the A game," said coach Andy Robinson.

Centre Ollie Smith, who also excelled, is also included in the squad.

Newcastle teenager Mathew Tait retains his place in the training party despite being dropped from the starting line-up to face France.

Robinson confirmed that prop Julian White, who missed the 18-17 defeat to France, will also miss the Ireland date with a neck injury.

"Julian has not yet recovered but I'm sure he will return to play an important part in our games later in the Championship," he added.

Robinson has dispensed with Gloucester number eight James Forrester, who was on the bench against Wales, and Saracens captain Hugh Vyvyan.

But Chris Jones, promoted above those two when Lewis Moody withdrew injured before the Cardiff defeat, retains his spot.

Bath prop Matt Stevens returns to the training squad, but Leeds full-back Iain Balshaw is omitted.

The inclusion of Goode, who took part in England training last month in Leeds and Loughborough, will inevitably raise questions over whether Charlie Hodgson's position is under threat after the French defeat.

The fly-half missed three penalties and a late drop goal attempt that would have clinched victory.

Goode, the leading points-scorer in the Zurich Premiership this season, is confident that if given a chance, he will cope with the atmosphere at Lansdowne Road.

"I wouldn't be a goal-kicker if I didn't think I could handle the pressure," he said.

"It's no good kicking 10 from 10 if you're winning 60-0, it's all about kicking your goals when it matters most - under pressure.

"I enjoy kicking under pressure and I thought I coped well in those two Wasps matches in the Heineken Cup - games many people said were virtually played at Test-match level.

"Obviously, it's just a 30-man squad, but all I can do is put my head down and work as hard as possible when the squad assembles on Sunday night."

Robinson is set to unveil his starting line-up on Tuesday.
