Noon on another marauding run for the Falcons at the weekend |
Newcastle director of rugby Rob Andrew has urged the England selectors to pick Jamie Noon in the centres. Noon produced an impressive display for the Falcons at the weekend and Andrew said: "Noony's form has been good and they have got to move forward."
Andrew said the fact that Noon and Mike Tindall usually play at outside centre should not count against them.
"Tindall can play in both positions as well," he said. "If they need to play left and right, mixing it up, do so."
Speaking to BBC Sport after Sunday's 19-14 win over Perpignan, Andrew added: "They are two very strong runners in that part of the field.
"Noony needs a run in the team and I would have no hesitation in putting him in."
Noon, 25, won five caps since his England debut in 2001 and was dropped from the England set-up ahead of the World Cup - but has now been included in the 40-man training squad ahead of the autumn internationals.
Noon himself said: "My aim is to play for England but it starts at home. "I have got to play well for Newcastle, and as a team if we are going forward and playing well and beating teams like Perpignan in the Heineken Cup, then that's great for me too."
Andrew also tipped Mathew Tait, recently named in the eight-man England Sevens squad for the IRB Sevens Series, as a future England star.
Tait, like Andrew an ex-pupil of the famous rugby-playing Barnard Castle School, scored on his Falcons debut at the age of 17 last season and has already been called into the Senior England Academy training squad. "He is a local boy and a very exceptional talent," Andrew enthused.
"We've been trying to keep him under wraps because he is only 18 and I do not want to lose him just yet, though I am sure I will in due course.
"He has played in two Heineken Cup games at outside centre and he is a very special talent, we've just got to let him develop."
