New England coach Andy Robinson has played down fears for the form and fitness of captain Jonny Wilkinson.

The star fly-half has suffered a number of injury scares during his comeback from a nine-month lay-off.

Robinson said: "I've been pleased with the way he has come back into rugby. He's been out for nine months and I think he's made really good strides."

He added that Wilkinson was responding well to treatment for the new injuries he had suffered since his return.

"Jonny has picked up a couple of knocks but they are different to the injury he had," Robinson said.

"The ongoing medical treatment he's getting is very positive."

Wilkinson has insisted that his injuries in recent games have not been caused by the neck and shoulder problem that caused his absence.

But Robinson implied Wilkinson would only play in England's Test against Canada on 10 November if medical staff were convinced he was fully recovered.

"It's one of those things where we will see what happens ready for the Canada game," Robinson said.

"I'm not going to jeopardise anyone's career or put any player into a situation where he is physically not right."
