Ruddock sweats on Thomas
Wales coach Mike Ruddock said an ankle injury to Gareth Thomas was the only negative in his side's six tries to nil victory over the Barbarians.

"The medical team are a little up-beat, but we won't know the extent of the injury for a day or two," said Ruddock.

"But we've got to take a lot of confidence from the result because the Barbarians meant business and they were hurting at the end of the game.

"They didn't like not scoring or coming second best, but that's what happened."

Thomas was strechered off on the hour mark and is now a major doubt for June's tour to Argentina and South Africa.

Before his injury, the full-back was one of many Wales players to shine at Bristol's Ashton Gate, scoring a try and playing a crucial role in Rhys Williams' score.

We want to develop a winning culture and some aggression in the set-piece and defence

Ceri Sweeney, Dwayne Peel, Gavin Henson and Hal Luscombe grabbed the other tries to give Ruddock a winning start to his tenure as coach.

Ruddock said he was impressed by the stylish attacking play which came to the fore in the second half, but he also took great pleasure from the determined defensive display.

"We'd been working on our set-piece, particularly, our scrummage," he said. "I thought we really attacked them in the scrum and took the legs out of their forward play.

"We worked on a new defensive system to get up and close to them down and I think the nil speaks for itself.

"That was a world-class Baa-Baas team and very well coached. A lot of credit has to my coaching staff - Scott Johnson and Clive Griffiths in particular for the defence."

He added: "We want to develop a winning culture and some aggression in the set-piece and defence.

"We know we've got flair, skill and ability. It'll be another step-up against Argentina. They'll have more time than the Baa-Baas did to get ready for us so it's going to be tough."
