Looking for a new England?
By Bryn Palmer

Eleven of England's 30-man squad touring New Zealand and Australia are 24 or under.

In the absence of a host of established stars, coach Sir Clive Woodward will assess some of the youngsters hoping to make it to the 2007 World Cup.

Uncapped quartet Harry Ellis, Michael Lipman, Andy Titterrell and Matt Stevens are bursting with potential.

And with the likes of Tom Voyce and David Flatman joining them, we look at the fresh faces of 'new England'.

Michael Lipman

Bath flanker Michael Lipman
Age: 24
Club: Bath
Position: Flanker
With Neil Back now retired and Lewis Moody and Alex Sanderson injured, Lipman has a real opportunity to stake a claim for the openside role.

After impressing in a struggling Bristol team last season, the tough-tackling flanker has been a key ingredient in Bath's resurgence this term.

As the only genuine number seven in the squad, Lipman could find himself up against Richie McCaw on his Test debut if Woodward opts to switch Richard Hill back to the blindside.

Tom Voyce

Wasps wing Tom Voyce
Age: 23
Club: Wasps
Position: Wing/f-back
Another player who has flourished since switching clubs, leaving Bath to provide a cutting edge out wide for English champions Wasps.

Voyce scored 15 tries in the Premiership this season, confirming his finishing ability with a blistering solo effort in their play-off win over Northampton.

Capped once three years ago in North America, his versatility should secure a place on the Test bench, and he will challenge James Simpson-Daniel for a starting spot.

Matt Stevens

Bath prop Matt Stevens
Age: 21
Club: Bath
Position: Tighthead
Stevens can count on the fingers of one hand the number of Premiership games he has started for Bath.

But the England coaching staff have seen enough of the Durban-born prop's potential to fast-track him into the Test set-up.

Impressed in the post-World Cup celebration match against the New Zealand Barbarians, Stevens was an unused replacement during the Six Nations and should make his full debut off the bench Down Under.

Harry Ellis

Leicester scrum-half Harry Ellis
Age: 22
Club: Leicester
Position: Scrum-half
After starring in Leicester's Heineken Cup triumph two years ago, Ellis' progress stalled during their demise last season.

But the feisty number nine has rediscovered his form in the Tigers' recent resurgence and is benefiting from putting a run of games together.

With Matt Dawson's fitness suspect and Andy Gomarsall not in top form, Woodward may be tempted to blood Ellis if his senior scrum-halves are struggling.

Andy Titterrell

Sale hooker Andy Titterrell
Age: 23
Club: Sale
Position: Hooker
Titterrell was an outside bet for last year's World Cup and also featured in the Six Nations training squad but has yet to make it into a match-day 22.

With Dorian West retired and Mark Regan the wrong side of 30, Titterrell has a chance to stake a claim to be Steve Thompson's long-term understudy.

Not the biggest hooker by any means but accuracy at the lineout and mobility around the field make him an attractive option off the bench.

David Flatman

Bath prop David Flatman
Age: 23
Club: Bath
Position: Loosehead
Given a baptism of fire against the Springboks as a 19-year-old in 2000, the prop won seven more caps over the following two years.

His early promise was halted by a string of injuries but has been a cornerstone of the Bath pack this season after leaving Saracens.

With Jason Leonard now retired, the way is clear for this aggressive scrummager to challenge Trevor Woodman for the loosehead berth.

Fraser Waters

Wasps centre Fraser Waters
Age: 28
Club: Wasps
Position: Centre
Proof that Woodward is not solely preoccupied with youth, Waters' selection is testament to the Wasps stalwart's sterling service in recent years.

An unsung hero in a star-studded team, Waters has had to make do with 'A' team duty since winning his solitary cap against the United States three years ago.

Not the fastest in the world but defensively sound and a good organiser, he will provide another option at outside centre if Mike Tindall fails to cut the mustard.
