Former England captain Martin Johnson says Jonny Wilkinson has what it takes to be a successful England leader. "Jonny has to be himself. He is a very intense guy and he doesn't really chase the limelight but that's fine," said Johnson, who retired last year.
"What's important is that Jonny has handled pressure well in the past and he is incredibly consistent as well as being incredibly dedicated.
"There's a good core of experienced players around him to help him out."
Wilkinson was appointed captain for England's three November internationals by acting coach Andy Robinson on Monday.
Johnson said he had no doubt the England team would give Wilkinson their full backing.
"Jonny is Jonny and will do it his way, but it's about the team and the core of this team has been around for four or five years - the likes of Danny Grewcock, Ben Kay, Phil Vickery and Steve Thompson.
"If the guys are not behind you then you've got no chance but the good thing about this England team is that there's a lot of pride and togetherness.
"The best Jonny, or any captain, can do is to play well and the others will back him up 100%."
Wilkinson plays his club rugby for Newcastle Falcons and the club's director of rugby Rob Andrew, himself a former England fly-half, insisted Wilkinson was "ready for the challenge of leading his country".
Andrew added: "I'm thrilled for Jonny that he has been given this honour.
"As a club, it's magnificent for Newcastle Falcons to have the current England captain playing for us, and everyone here is extremely proud of him.
"I believe the timing is right for both Jonny and for England, and we wish him the greatest success during his captaincy."
