England drop Dawson

Matt Dawson could be facing the end of his Test career after he was dropped from England's Elite Player Squad.

Acting head coach Andy Robinson axed the Wasps scrum-half from the 60-man group after he was unable to attend training through business commitments.

"The door is still open for a return at some point, should his priorities change," said Robinson.

"I am disappointed to be out of the squad but I understand and respect Andy's decision," Dawson said.

Dawson's interests outside rugby have grown since he helped England to World Cup glory in Australia last November.

He was recently installed as one of the team captains on the BBC's popular Question Of Sport television series.

"I will be working hard to earn my place back," Dawson added. "I have a long standing commitment that I simply can't reverse."

We are both disappointed with the situation

Robinson was holding the first of a two-day training session on Monday in his new role at the helm of the England team.

It is the first of several get-togethers ahead of November internationals against Canada, South Africa and Australia.

Robinson has indicated he will replace Dawson, along with the retired Lawrence Dallaglio, in the 60-man elite squad, suggesting his England days could be over.

"I respect Matt's decision and wish him well," Robinson added.

"It is important that the England squad makes full use of its training days together, but Matt is unable to attend due to a business commitment. We are both disappointed with the situation."

Should Dawson's absence become permanent, Gloucester's Andy Gomarsall is likely to take over for the autumn Tests, with Leicester's Harry Ellis the other main contender after touring New Zealand and Australia in the summer.
