Woodward praises Dallaglio

England coach Sir Clive Woodward paid tribute to Lawrence Dallaglio's "outstanding" career after his captain retired from internationals on Tuesday.

"He has been not only an outstanding player, but a great captain and we wish him well," said Woodward.

"Lawrence was an integral part of the squad that was unbeaten on the 2003 summer tour and won the Grand Slam and the Rugby World Cup in the same year."

"I have started the process of finding suitable candidates to replace him."

While Woodward said he was aware of Dallaglio's decision and accepted his reasons, others were stunned by the news.

"Dallaglio's retirement from international rugby has come as a big surprise to me, but it is something I fully understand and respect," said Wasps rugby director Warren Gatland.

Former Lions coach

"He has been a fantastic ambassador for English rugby, and has always been a player and captain who wears his heart on his sleeve.

"Lawrence has played a major part in helping English rugby reach the heights it has achieved today. He will be missed on the international stage."

Former Lions coach Ian McGeechan, who is now the Scottish Rugby Union director of rugby, also praised Dallaglio.

Dallaglio played for McGeechan on the victorious Lions tour of South Africa in 1997.

"Lawrence was one of the central personalities in England's success over the last seven years," said McGeechan.

"I found him a very good player to work with. He had a great attitude to the game and a good understanding of it and I always found him very easy to talk to.

"There is no doubt the consistency of his performance within a core group of players that England have fielded over the last few years was instrumental to their success."

Rugby Football Union president Malcolm Phillips added: "On behalf of the RFU, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Lawrence for the huge contribution he has made.

"He has never given anything less than his best for his country, and I'm sure he will continue to have an excellent career with London Wasps."

And RFU chief executive Francis Baron said: "Lawrence has performed with great distinction for England, and played an integral part in England's success.

"He was captain when I took my position in October, 1998 and I have always enjoyed my dealings with him.

"I wish him every success with London Wasps and his post-playing career."
