New Scotland coach Matt Williams pulled no punches in his analysis of his side's 23-10 Six Nations defeat to Wales. The Scots were outplayed for large parts of the game in Cardiff, despite improving immeasurably during the second half.
"We did not play well and it was hugely disappointing," Williams said.
"This shows how far we have to travel. There will be a lot of pain before we get to where we want to be."
Scotland failed to recover after Wales produced some scintillating rugby to score two tries in the opening 14 minutes.
Number eight Simon Taylor did cross in the closing stages for the visitors, but the result was never in doubt.
"I thought we should have got our points earlier than that," said Williams.
"I was disappointed with the width of our game. It was very tight.
"The choice of mauling so often was not as accurate as it could have been and there were a lot of simple errors. "
Although it was generally poor start to the Six Nations campaign, Williams conceded there were some positives to be taken from the defeat.
"Our scrum was good and our line-out was good," he said. "As was our set phase defence.
"But it was not the performance we were looking for. We have to learn from this and move forward for the England game next week."
