Lukas van Biljon has been withdrawn from South Africa's World Cup training squad following an altercation at a Durban nightclub. The 27-year-old was involved in a similar incident less than two months ago, although Van Biljon says he was acting as peacemaker.
He said: "My friends had had a lot to drink and an argument broke out in the car park between them and a group of youngsters.
"A fight resulted and I stepped in to break it up. My friends were the aggressors."
SA Rugby Pty Ltd managing director Rian Oberholzer immediately took the decision to pull Van Biljon from the squad while the incident is investigated.
"Van Biljon is not out of the World Cup, but he has been withdrawn until we at SA Rugby can gather all the facts," Springbok media manager Mark Keohane said.
"One story claims that he tried to break up a fight and another claims that he was one of the central instigators, we will have to investigate it ourselves and make a judgement.
"We will not be calling a replacement to the squad."
Van Biljon came on as a substitute against the All Blacks in Dunedin earlier this month in a match that South Africa lost 19-11.
The Springboks name their final 30-man World Cup squad on 30 August.
