Leonard is a true England legend |
England boss Clive Woodward says Jason Leonard, who will captain the shadow side against Wales on Saturday, is playing for his place in the World Cup. Leonard may have won 104 caps but Woodward says the veteran Harlequins prop is not guaranteed a trip to Australia come October.
"No he hasn't booked his place," said Woodward. "I haven't decided yet whether to take four or five props.
"I must say that looking at the condition of Jason I've never seen him in better shape.
"He's doing everything he possibly can to make sure he gets the nod and I'm delighted that he's captain at the weekend.
"This weekend Jason Leonard has got to play very well in order to put pressure on the other props who are also very keen to go."
Leonard understands the situation and has vowed to turn in a performance which will guarantee him a place in England's 30-man squad for the World Cup.
"We obviously want the win but there is also a place for the World Cup at stake," he said.
"So my role as captain is to help as many people as I can during the match but also to try and put in a good performance myself. I want to get in that World Cup squad."
Leonard warned his team against being selfish as they try to catch the selectors' eye and stressed that they must operate as a unit.
"The coaches are very astute. They will spot it immediately if someone goes out and tries to play the game for themselves," he said.
"Admittedly it is about playing the game which will put you on the sheet for the World Cup, but it's also a team game and we want the team performance to go our way as well."
