O'Driscoll was injured in Leinster's Heineken Cup semi-final defeat |
Ireland's captain Brian O'Driscoll has been ruled out of his side's summer tour to Australia, Tonga and Samoa.
The Leinster, Ireland and Lions centre has not recovered from a hamstring injury suffered during his province's Heineken Cup semi-final defeat to Perpignan last month.
O'Driscoll is one of five players ruled out of the three-Test tour.
Injuries have also accounted for Leinster centre/wing Shane Horgan (thigh), Munster prop John Hayes (groin), Munster utility back Jeremy Staunton (groin) and Ulster scrum-half Neil Doak (shoulder).
Regular captain Keith Wood, meanwhile, will travel but not play.
The squad includes nine Ulster players.
Ulster hooker Paul Shields has been selected along with his Ballymena colleagues, backs Paddy Wallace and James Topping.
Paul Shields is in the Irish squad for the summer tour |
It has been a memorable end of the season for winger Topping, this call-up coming just a couple of weeks after his match-winning try against Clontarf in the final of the All Ireland League.
Wallace also makes a welcome return to the international set-up after his leg break last autumn.
The utility back got his first Irish senior call-up for the trip to Siberia in September but sustained the injury a week before the World Cup qualifer.
Munster flanker David Wallace will play a full part on tour having missed the whole season after shoulder surgery last summer.
He is included in one of the sides for a pre-summer tour training match organised for next Friday evening at Thomond Park, Limerick.
Reggie Corrigan will captain a Whites side coached by Leinster's Matt Williams against a Colours team to be led by Anthony Foley and coached by Munster's Alan Gaffney.
Ireland will play Australia in Perth on Saturday 7 June, then Tonga on 14 June and Samoa on 20 June.
A team captain will be named before each game.
