Jones urges Hansen to early exit
HANSEN'S WALES RECORD

Former Wales and Lions scrum-half Robert Jones says Wales coach Steve Hansen should leave his job after the World Cup.

Speaking on the BBC's Scrum V rugby programme after Wales' record defeat to the All Blacks, Jones said that a new four-year planning cycle must start immediately after this autumn's tournament in Australia.

Hansen's contract with the Welsh Rugby Union runs until the end of the 2004 Six Nations and he has repeatedly stated his intention to see the job through.

After that, the Kiwi plans to return to New Zealand where he has targeted a Super 12 coaching position.

Jones says there is no point in Hansen staying until 2004
"I would stick with Hansen until the World Cup is over, then immediately bring in either Gareth Jenkins or Mike Ruddock," said Jones.

"I don't see any point in his staying until the next Six Nations."

Jones' former Wales half-back partner Jonathan Davies added: "If we don't get to the World Cup quarter-finals he (Hansen) should go then and there."

Hansen last week received the backing of the WRU general committee, in the face of a growing body of opinion that the national team should have a Welsh coach.

We've wasted 15 years because of the morons in the Union who don't want to listen
Jonathan Davies

The committee are happy with Hansen's coaching and believe that removing him would not improve results; that Hansen has inherited a confidence-shorn squad; that the public need to be patient and accept the limited resources at Wales' disposal.

Wales have lost their last nine games, and since Hansen took over from Graham Henry in February, 2002, have won just four of 19 matches - against Italy, Romania, Fiji and Canada (all on home soil).

The cash-strapped WRU would struggle to pay compensation if they sought to sever Hansen's contract, which is worth over 200,000 per year.

HAVE YOUR SAY

The Kiwi has repeatedly cited the structural problems in the Welsh game as the reason for repeated failure and has urged the need for patience.

Jonathan Davies bemoaned the inertia in the administration in the game in Wales that means the country has not advanced since the disastrous 1988 tour of New Zealand.

"We've wasted 15 yeas because of the morons in the Union who don't want to listen," said Davies, "We're always playing catch-up."
