Kirwan will lead Italy to the World Cup |
New Zealander John Kirwan has extended his contract as coach of Italy's national rugby team.
Kirwan will remain in charge of the Italian team until the end of the World Cup in Australia in November.
Kirwan led Italy to a single victory in the Six Nations this year, but the 30-22 result over Wales was Italy's first in the competition since February 2000.
Meanwhile, president Giancarlo Dondi said the Italian federation is still hoping that World Cup organizers will change Italy's compressed schedule.
Italy play their four Pool D matches over 14 days, while group opponents New Zealand have 22 days, Wales have 21 and Canada have 17.
The other team in the pool, Tonga, also have 14 days to play its games.
"We have taken the necessary steps to force organizers to change the program," Dondi said.
The Italian federation this month threatened to pull out of the World Cup unless their schedule was changed.
