The Baa-Baas had little difficulty in breaking through Welsh tackles |
Wales coach Steve Hansen criticised his team's defensive play after watching the Barbarians score eight tries in their 35-48 victory in Cardiff. The Kiwi said he was concerned with the amount of "soft tries" the Baa-Baas scored, and admitted his side will need to improve their tackling before facing Australia and New Zealand next month.
"With a couple of the tries, you could have pushed a pram and walked over the tryline to score them," Hansen told BBC Sport.
"We were busy attacking, but the next minute they got the ball and scored at the other end.
"We've got to look at why that's happening, but it probably won't be such a problem in the Test matches."
Wales managed to ensure a touch of respectability on the scoreboard by scoring five tries, with replacement Tom Shanklin grabbing a hat-trick.
A lot of the guys haven't played for a month and I think they found it difficult to get back into the pace of the game Wales captain Martyn Williams |
But the defeat extends Wales' losing streak to seven matches, and Hansen was left looking hard for any positive aspects from a loose performance. "They were asked plenty of questions about their fitness and I think we stuck in there well," he added.
Hanes added he was also encouraged by he performances of debutants Mike Phillips, Gareth Delve, Alix Popham and Adam Jones.
Captain Martyn Williams said he was disappointed with the scrappy nature of his team's play.
"We fancied we could turn theses over today," he said. "But a lot of the guys haven't played for a month and I think they found it difficult to get back into the pace of the game.
"But the Barbarians showed how good a side they are. They beat Scotland and England last week and we found it difficult against them."
The Wales squad fly out to Australia on Monday to prepare for the Tests against the Wallabies (14 June) and New Zealand (21 June).
Financial constraints mean that defence coach Clive Griffiths is left at home.
