Monye inspires England
Ugo Monye of England
Monye sat out the opening game

Ugo Monye consolidated his standing as England's outstanding player at the Hong Kong Sevens by scoring heavily in victories over Taiwan and Tonga.

He picked up four tries in the 43-5 win over Taiwan and then grabbed two more tries in the 42-7 victory over Tonga..

"Ugo is certainly enjoying his rugby at the moment," said England coach Joe Lydon.

"I'm lucky where I can put him in the starting line-up and replace him with Richard Haughton. It's great to have two players like that in the team."

For Monye, who starred on his debut at the Brisbane Sevens by scoring two tries in the final against Fiji, Hong Kong is everything he had expected.

"This is a new experience for me," said the Harlequins wing.

"It's just fantastic. Some of the boys had told me about the Hong Kong Sevens, but until you run out there and hear the crowd you can't appreciate how wonderful this place is."

Roland Reid picked up a hat-trick of tries in Scotland's 38-0 victory over Sri Lanka and Ken Morris did likewise for Wales in their 40-12 win over Holland.

As expected, the main challenges for England's crown will come from perennial contenders New Zealand and Fiji.

The Kiwis cruised past the United States 57-7 and then crushed Namibia 46-0 with seven different players scoring tries.

Fiji relied on individual skills and speed to defeat Japan 59-7, and then Canada 33-12 to top Pool C.
