Charvis offered Swansea exit

By Colin Charvis
Wales international forward

Everyone is pretty shocked after what was a heartbreaking defeat to Ireland on Saturday.

It seemed it was a game like the one in 1999 against England at Wembley, where we stuck at it, scrapped for everything and fought our way back into contention.

We've taken many kicks in the teeth but when Stephen Jones' drop goal went over we thought we'd finally got a victory.

Even after Ronan O'Gara had put Ireland back into the lead we still thought we could do it.

There's been a lot of talk about Justin Bishop's knock-on when we were attacking at the very end, and whether the referee had signalled a penalty or scrum - or if he played advantage correctly.

Steve Lander has picked up some flack in the press but I can't pretend to know what was in his mind.

Myself and six or seven other players have been offered redundancy

I saw his arm out and decided to take the ball straight up the middle, believing we'd either secure a better position or get the decision from the referee.

Nothing came our way, but when teams are on a roll and confident all the luck seems to go their way - and the opposite is true for teams who are struggling.

We do spend a lot of time working on our performance and I think we showed that we're a good team with a bright future, but we're still looking at the wooden spoon.

It's not good for the team to get no reward after all the hard work that's been put in, after we've laid our bodies on the line for 80 minutes.

There's now one last chance against France next week.

We've had success in Paris but this season we've not been very good on the road and we've lost our momentum.

But the main attention will be on Lansdowne Road - Ireland versus England for the Grand Slam is a great decider.

I wouldn't put my money on either side, it's too close to call, but there is a degree of home advantage involved and the way Ireland are playing is very exciting at the moment.

While this week will be spent with Wales preparing for the France match, I've also got to come to a decision about my future with Swansea.

Because of the financial difficulties at the club, which went into temporary administration two weeks ago, myself and six or seven other players have been offered redundancy packages.

They made the offer on Friday evening and I'll have a chat with them on Tuesday or Wednesday to come to a decision.

If my future doesn't lie with Swansea Rugby Club then so be it, but I've made my home in Swansea and the new Swansea-Neath regional team is what I've been aiming for.

Now that it looks like the plan for regional teams has been sorted out, it's a huge relief for the players because we can plan for the future.

But the powers that be must sort out the personnel for the teams as soon as possible - we can't go on tour in the summer wondering whether we'll have jobs to come back to next season.

The suggestion is that it could all be decided by the end of May, which would mean that should I accept Swansea's offer I'd only be looking at two months in limbo.

It wouldn't be a bad opportunity to experience a different team culture if somebody comes in for me on a game-by-game basis.

But in a World Cup year, it could be a heaven-sent opportunity to have a break from playing and just work on my conditioning with Wales fitness coach Andy Hore.

Either way there's a lot to think about this week, but I'll be focussing my main attention on beating France this Saturday.
