Hodgson was only on the field for six minutes on Sunday |
England international Charlie Hodgson looks certain to miss the World Cup later this year after being ruled out of action for six months. The Sale Sharks fly-half suffered a knee injury during England's RBS Six Nations Championship victory over Italy at Twickenham on Sunday.
Hodgson had come on as a second-half substitute in the 40-5 win after skipper Jonny Wilkinson had taken a knock.
But he only played six minutes before getting injured himself.
"It is very disappointing to pick up this injury, particularly the way it happened with my studs getting stuck in the turf," Hodgson said.
"I just want to start my rehabilitation as soon as possible and I am just looking forward to playing again."
For this to happen so early in his career when he is playing on top of his game is devastating |
A scan on Wednesday revealed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
The serious nature of the injury means Hodgson will be sidelined until mid-September, barely a month before England launch their World Cup campaign in Australia.
There is no doubt that the 22-year-old would have been an integral part of England coach Clive Woodward's plans Down Under, given his versatility.
Although he could be fit again before the World Cup kicks off in October, his lack of match fitness and general training work will count against him.
Meanwhile, the Sharks, pushing for a place in this season's Zurich Championship final, must now do without one of their most influential players.
Sale coach Jim Mallinder said: "I am devastated for Charlie, more than for England and for the Sharks.
"For this to happen so early in his career when he is playing on top of his game is devastating, and it has cruelly robbed him of a World Cup place."
