Scotland coach Ian McGeechan had no qualms about keeping Murray in the starting line-up after the lock performed well in training this week.

"When Martin was injured, we thought the balance was right to look at the second row with Scott coming in," said the coach.

"He offers us a great deal and we were looking at the best shape of the pack as we wanted it if Martin wasn't there.

"We thought then that it was obvious we should start with Scott.

McGeechan has kept the changes to a minimum despite the 38-3 defeat by France.

The match against the Welsh is being billed as a wooden spoon showdown, with both sides looking for their first victory of the championship.

Centre Kevin Utterson retains his place after winning his first cap in Paris.

Borders team-mate Gregor Townsend keeps his place, despite pressure from Leeds Tykes' Gordon Ross.

But Townsend will move from outside centre to stand-off in the absence of Laney, who has been struggling with a niggling injury.

McLaren returns to the international starting XV for the first time since last year's game against Wales.

Chris Paterson will play on the right wing, with�Kenny Logan at No. 11, the positions they filled against France.
