Humphreys cool on World Cup
By Dewi Hughes

Humphreys made his debut in the 1995 World Cup
Wales captain Jonathan Humphreys says he has not even contemplated the possibility of playing in this year's World Cup.

Humphreys was sensationally recalled to the Wales side after almost four years in the international wilderness for the Six Nations match with England.

Coach Steve Hansen hoped the 34-year-old would lift a side still reeling from the shock defeat to Italy in championship opener.

And despite suffering another defeat, the gamble paid off as Humphreys led from the front.

It's nice to come back and be more relaxed about it

Hansen has already indicated that Humphreys will keep the captaincy for the next match against Scotland.

But the Bath hooker told BBC Sport he is simple keeping the number two jersey warm for first choice Robin McBryde.

"I'm here to help out until the other hookers get back fit," said Humphreys, who has appeared in the last three World Cups.

"I thought Gareth Williams played very well when he came on and I just feel these are the boys that are going to the World Cup.

"But if I can help in any way I can, then I will."

He added: "I was shocked when Steve (Hansen) asked me to play and be captain.

"My experiences as captain and playing for Wales haven't necessarily been the best.

"But it's nice to come back and be more relaxed about it and not get dragged into feeling I have to be a martyr.

Dropping the captain of a national team often seems to galvanize teams
Wales coach Steve Hansen
"I just wanted to help the boys."

Hansen certainly had no complaints about Humphreys' performances or leadership qualities.

The Kiwi has certainly not shut the door on Colin Charvis' hopes of regaining the captaincy, and he hopes the flanker will soon rediscover his best form.

But Humphreys looks to be the favourite to lead Wales against Scotland in a fortnight, and has not been ruled out of Hansen's World Cup options.

"Dropping the captain of a national team often seems to galvanize teams," said Hansen.

"Jonathan's done a superb job. He's done exactly what we've asked for him. He'll be staying with us for the rest of the Six Nations and then we'll readdress the situation."
