England coach Clive Woodward has named 12 uncapped players in his squad to face the Barbarians next week.

Injuries and sevens commitments have deprived Woodward of almost half his original 27-man party for the Prudential Tour game at Twickenham on 26 May.

Lawrence Dallaglio, Iain Balshaw, Mike Tindall and Declan Danaher are all ruled out with injuries.

Josh Lewsey, Michael Stephenson, Ben Johnston and Nick Duncombe have been switched to England's squad for the London Sevens tournament.

Fly-half Jonny Wilkinson is rested and wing Ben Cohen drops out as he has already played the maximum 32 games for club and country allowed under the England Rugby Limited agreement.

Gloucester wing James Simpson-Daniel, Bristol's Phil Christophers, London Irish backs Michael Horak and Geoff Appleford and Leeds wing Dan Scarbrough have all been called up.

Newcastle lock Hugh Vyvyan and Northampton forwards Robbie Morris and Grant Seely will also get the chance to impress.

"I welcome the new players to the England squad," said Woodward.

"They will have the opportunity to impress before final selection next Wednesday, and I am sure that they will benefit from the experience of being involved with the England set-up."

No players from Leicester or Sale were considered because of the clubs are involved in European finals on 25 and 26 May.

Wilkinson, who has been given the summer off, initially looked like he might have to play due to Charlie Hodgson's unavailability.

But Woodward said: "I have talked to Jonny and we've both decided that he should not be involved in the Barbarians match.

"Jonny has had a very long season and is not part of my plans for Argentina.

"His omission from the squad will offer the opportunity for one of the other players to step up and prove to me that they can perform at international level."

With Dallaglio sidelined by a hand injury, Gloucester prop Phil Vickery will captain England against the Barbarians.

More than 55,000 tickets have so far been sold for the game.

The Barbarians will also face Wales in Cardiff on 29 May and Scotland at Murrayfield three days later.
