Despite the bright conditions at Kingsholm there was little about the action that was glorious

Gloucester beat Premiership new boys Worcester to record their first Premiership win of the season in a dull and turgid encounter at Kingsholm.

The hosts piled on 16 unanswered points in the first half after Jonny May went in for a seventh-minute try.

Tim Taylor kicked 14 points with only a Joe Carlisle penalty for Worcester.

After the break a Freddie Burns penalty and converted Tom Voyce try sealed the win before Dale Rasmussen's consolation try for Worcester at the death.

The opening try came from a loose pass by fly-half Carlisle which May gathered before racing away under the posts.

The young stand-off then missed a penalty and misplaced a kick that handed Gloucester a scrum in his team's 22 - which then led to a penalty that Taylor landed to add to his earlier conversion.

Miles Benjamin incurred the next penalty when he held onto the ball after he was hunted down by Charlie Sharples and on the half hour Taylor made it three penalties.

Carlisle pulled three points back but just before the stroke of half-time, former Gloucester wing Marcel Garvey was sin-binned for killing the ball under pressure from Lesley Vainikolo and Taylor made it 19-3 with his boot.

There was no score for most of the second half as Worcester toiled and conceded several turn-overs.

Vainikolo failed to hold a try-scoring pass from Taylor and Worcester substitute Andy Goode pushed a kickable penalty attempt wide.

Burns converted his penalty and the young tyro then created the space for May to put Voyce away for his late score.

Rasmussen went over in injury time for the Warriors but they were largely dead and buried at half-time.

POST-MATCH VIEWS

Gloucester manager Bryan Redpath tells BBC Gloucestershire:

"We went into the game with 13 players unavailable and to come out with a performance that was disciplined was great.

"Sometimes we were a little cautious which is unlike us, but we had to make sure that we picked away at the penalties.

"It was the first game for the referee in the Premiership so we knew he would referee to the letter of the law but we controlled the contact area really well, were honest and worked hard."

Worcester head coach Richard Hill told BBC Hereford and Worcester:

"You have got to take your opportunities and we have had several good chances near their line and didn't score.

"There was some terrific defence by Gloucester but we didn't take our chances - we missed a couple of kicks which you have to take.

"When they got near our line they were pretty clinical, but the frustrating thing was I don't think there was a massive difference between the two teams apart from the fact they were a bit more clinical than we were."
