Richards' reputation was tarnished by the 'Bloodgate' furore

Former Harlequins boss Dean Richards worked as an adviser with Worcester, the club have confirmed.

Richards, who was banned for three years from coaching after a fake blood scandal, was part of a review conducted by Worcester after their relegation.

Richards helped with the club's decision to appoint former Bristol boss Richard Hill as their new head coach.

"For the avoidance of doubt, Dean Richards's role in the review was cleared with the RFU," said Worcester.

Richards was suspended over his role in the faking of injuries for strategic purposes during his time as director of rugby at Harlequins.

The matter was brought to a head when winger Tom Williams was caught using fake blood capsules to simulate an injury in the Heineken Cup quarter-final defeat by Leinster in April 2009, allowing Quins to bring fly-half Nick Evans back on to the pitch.

Richards was subsequently banned for three years from coaching in European competition, and the ban was extended worldwide by governing body the International Rugby Board.

However, the RFU confirmed on Thursday that the ban only precludes day-to-day involvement with players.

RFU disciplinary officer Jeff Blackett said: "Dean Richards asked me to clarify the terms of the judgment, which I have done in consultation with the IRB.

"We are content that, in his capacity as an adviser, he does not breach the terms of the judgement."

In a separate statement the RFU added that Richards's role, which was to write a report for Worcester and make recommendations, was now over and that he has "no ongoing permission from the RFU to carry out any further work for Worcester or any other club or body".

The RFU added: "We would further stress that this does not mean Dean Richards is back in rugby.

"He is not permitted to have anything to do with coaching or being a director of a club in any capacity and he may not act as a consultant to any club in terms of coaching or other rugby matters."
