Promising Sale forward James Gaskell tries to elude Leeds' Andy Gomarsall
Sale launched a second-half fightback to deny bottom side Leeds a first home Premiership win of the season.
Converted tries from Lee Blackett and Scott Barrow, plus a Ceiron Thomas penalty, gave the hosts a 17-3 lead early in the second half.
Ben Cohen's converted try just before the hour mark made it 17-10 and Sale were level four minutes later through Richard Wigglesworth's converted score.
And Sale claimed victory as Carl Fearns went over six minutes from time.
Leeds head coach Neil Back:
"It's a bitter pill to swallow and I feel for the players.
"I thought it was a winning performance with a lot of positives.
"Hodgson kicked intelligently and that was pivotal to Sale's gameplan and comeback in the second half."
Sale director of rugby Kingsley Jones:
"At half-time we were on suicide watch but you've got to give Leeds a lot of credit because they played outstandingly well in the first half.
"Just after the restart we looked like we were going to go down but full credit to the players, they had the belief.
"The kicking game of Charlie Hodgson allowed us to play some great rugby and let's hope we can now take some positives from this into Friday's home game against Wasps."
