Johne Murphy's try after 76 seconds set Leicester on the road to victory and meant they kept their record of never losing at home in the league to Quins.

Derick Hougaard and Nick Evans traded penalties before Hougaard scored Leicester's second try.

Matt Smith extended the lead after the break, chasing his own kick to score.

The home side left themselves open as they searched for a bonus point and they were punished when Chris Brooker scored a late try for Harlequins.

Leicester head coach Heyneke Meyer on Derick Hougaard:

"He's been struggling with a hamstring injury of late and has a 3cm tear but he's been working very hard.

"He shouldn't have played but his all-round game including his kicking was good and he scored a try for us.

"We really needed him and he has been superb for us. I'm very proud of the guys, they showed a lot of character."

Harlequins director of rugby Dean Richards:

"We gave them the first 13 points. The first kick-off, we lost it and they scored. We kicked-off again, dropped it and they scored another.

"You can't allow yourself to come to a place like this and have to try to claw yourself back into a game early on.

"The blame lies with ourselves because of our poor start."
