Captain Steve Borthwick has insisted that England are fully focused on the second Test against New Zealand.

New Zealand police are investigating a "serious allegation" against up to four England players after an alleged incident in a hotel room.

But Borthwick dead-batted queries about players' off-field activities, saying: "That is specifically a question for (tour manager) Rob (Andrew)."

"I am very happy with preparations this week," added Borthwick.

"The players have worked tremendously hard in training. We will provide a better performance and a better account of ourselves this weekend."

England lost the first Test against New Zealand 37-20 in Auckland last Saturday, with the alleged incident reported to have occurred later that night.

New Zealand police have told the England management that they want to speak with the players about the allegations, although no formal complaint has been lodged.

The tour is being led by Andrew as new team boss Martin Johnson remained in England because of the birth of his second child.

However, Borthwick revealed he had spoken to Johnson and the 2003 World Cup-winning captain had reminded him of the importance of focusing on the challenge ahead.

"I have spoken to Martin. With somebody of Martin Johnson's character, any conversation you have with him is going to be a positive experience," said Borthwick.

Whenever you see teams or families under pressure they always unite and become close

The captain added that morale in the squad was still high and that England are a "tight group".

New Zealand assistant coach Steve Hansen said: "Whenever you see teams or families under pressure, they always unite and become close.

"That's what will happen with the English team. They will batten down the hatches and look after each other.

"They want to play a Test match on Saturday so the best thing they can do is focus on that and I'm sure they will be working hard at doing that.

"They will want to go home with a performance they can be proud of and hopefully for them they'll want a winning one. Hopefully for us it won't be."
