Tom Guest has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Quins |
Harlequins' Chris Robshaw, Tom Guest, Will Skinner and Ugo Monye are among nine players called into England's training squad to face the Barbarians. They are included in a 27-man party to prepare for the Twickenham game on 1 June - the only warm-up match before next month's two-Test New Zealand tour. It is missing eight players - six from Wasps, two from Leicester - involved in the Premiership final on 31 May. Five Bath players in Sunday's European Challenge Cup final are also omitted. Sale prop Andrew Sheridan is the only other player touring New Zealand who does not feature in the training squad for the Baa-Baas date. | 606: DEBATE |
As well as the Harlequins quartet, Gloucester centre Anthony Allen, Bristol prop Alex Clarke, Saracens prop Nick Lloyd, Newcastle flanker David Wilson and Leeds lock Stuart Hooper are the others called up from the England Saxons squad named last week. Bath-bound Hooper also replaces Gloucester's Alex Brown, who has a neck injury, in the Churchill Cup party. With Danny Cipriani cruelly sidelined for six months following his serious ankle injury, and Jonny Wilkinson also recovering from shoulder surgery, the Barbarians game is an opportunity for Sale's Charlie Hodgson to cement his status as the likely fly-half to face the All Blacks. Hodgson last started an England game in November 2006 |
Hodgson last started an England match in November 2006, in the last days of Andy Robinson's regime, and failed to make the cut for last year's World Cup squad after returning from reconstructive knee surgery. His only outing since was as a late replacement in England's dismal Six Nations defeat by Scotland in March. Newcastle's Toby Flood is the only other alternative for the number 10 shirt in the squad for the Baa-Baas game, with Olly Barkley involved with Bath, and no place for Gloucester's Ryan Lamb. Elite rugby director Rob Andrew, England's tour manager for New Zealand in the absence of Martin Johnson, said: "We've picked a very strong England squad. "There a lot of caps amongst the backs and with so many forwards tied up with their clubs in the Guinness Premiership and European Challenge Cup finals, a number of players in the Saxons squad will have their opportunity to put a marker down for future senior team selection." The final 22-man squad to face the Ba-Baas will be announced next Wednesday.
