Worcester 17-14 Gloucester

Guinness Premiership

Worcester (12) 17
Try: Tuitupou, Benjamin, Delport
Cons: Drahm

Gloucester (14) 14
Try: Vainikolo, Lawson
Cons: Lamb (2)

Gloucester returned to the top of the table with a losing bonus point despite Thinus Delport's last-gasp try giving Worcester victory at Sixways.

Tries by Sam Tuitupou and Miles Benjamin put Worcester on top before Lesley Vainikolo scored to give the visitors hope just before half-time.

Marcel Garvey was injured trying to stop him, and in injury time Rory Lawson's try put Gloucester ahead.

The second half was scoreless until Benjamin set up Delport to win it.

  • Worcester head coach Clive Griffiths:
  • "We set out to create a bit of history, having never beaten Gloucester before. Making history had been our theme all week.

"The month of March has been very good to us with three wins and a draw. We just needed to hang in there, and that half-chance came at the end.

"We have beaten Sale, Leicester and Gloucester this month. There is a great cohesiveness and things have come to fruition - I think we have got more of an all-round game now."

  • Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan:
  • "We left the opportunity out there for them to mug us.

"We had every opportunity to have managed the game, but we just didn't do it.

"We ended the first half on top, then we failed to manage the game. We are not playing with as much fluency as we would like."

Worcester: Delport, Garvey, Rasmussen, Tuitupou, Benjamin, Drahm, Powell, Windo, Lutui, Taumoepeau, Rawlinson, Gillies, Wood, Sanderson (capt), Horstmann.
Replacements: Morris, Mullan, Bowley, Hickey, Carlisle, Arr, Gear.

Gloucester: Morgan, Balshaw, Simpson-Daniel, Allen, Vainikolo, Lamb, Lawson, Wood, Titterrell, Nieto, Bortolami (capt), Brown, Strokosch, Qera, Narraway.
Replacements: Paul, Dickinson, James, Delve, Cooper, Walker, Paterson.

  • Warriors director of rugby Mike Ruddock told BBC Hereford and Worcester:
  • "We have spoken about trying to make history, but we did manage to beat them in the Middlesex Sevens this season.

"I've watched Gloucester over the past couple of seasons, and think they are a better side this season than when they reached the Premiership final last year.

"We know we have to make a good start, there's going to be a massive crowd, sold out weeks ago, and we know it's a very big game for us."

  • Gloucester captain Peter Buxton told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
  • "It's great to get the squad back together. It's great to get the Six Nations out of the way and everyone's focused on the end of the season.

"We've got two away games remaining and if we can win this one it will take the pressure off with three home games to come, but we can't be thinking about Munster in the Heineken Cup next week.

"It is a good time of the season to be involved in two big competitions but if our eye is off the ball this week Worcester will take a scalp against us."
