Bristol and Wasps ended deadlocked after an entertaining and absorbing Guinness Premiership encounter at the Memorial Stadium.

The home side led 20-13 inside the last quarter after two tries from impressive winger Tom Arscott and one from his brother Luke at outside centre.

But a Wasps penalty try set up a tense finish, with Bristol replacement Ed Barnes landing an equalising penalty.

Wasps' Eoin Reddan scored the first try but they also had two players binned.

Lock Simon Shaw was shown yellow in the first half for a trip on Brian O'Riordan, while second-row partner Richard Birkett followed after the break for elbowing Matt Salter.

But Wasps did well to come back against a fired-up Bristol side who attacked and defended right in the face of the European champions, shackling their rising star Dan Cipriani at fly-half.

The draw kept Bristol in seventh in the table but allowed Wasps to climb one place to eighth.

Wasps took an early lead with a Cipriani penalty and they struck again shortly after when Reddan raced over following Riki Flutey's stunning break down the right flank.

Bristol ignored Wasps' swagger and hit back in spectacular fashion when Tom Arscott straightened his line to crash over from a short pass from brother Luke.

Shaw departed soon after and Tom Arscott compounded Wasps' problems when he profited from full-back Mark Van Gisbergen's calamitous fumble to gather his own kick ahead and score.

The boot of Cipriani took the visitors back in front but shortly before the break, Tom Arscott's dynamic attack gave his side a promising field position, and Jason Strange landed a penalty to give the hosts the 15-13 half-time lead.

Tensions increased after the interval, ignited by a late Tom Arscott tackle on Wasps wing Josh Lewsey and fuelled by Birkett's swing at Salter.

But when Luke Arscott sliced over from close-range, Bristol took a healthy 20-13 lead, though Barnes, on for the injured Strange, missed an easy conversion.

A Cipriani penalty seemed to rejuvenate Wasps and they laid siege to the Bristol line, eventually earning a penalty try for a deliberately collapsed scrum to edge 23-20 ahead with Cipriani's conversion.

Barnes redeemed himself inside the last 10 minutes to level the scores and both sides trudged off rueing what they both thought should have been a win.

  • Bristol coach Richard Hill:
"Our defence was outstanding, and we allowed Cipriani, Riki Flutey and Fraser Waters no space at all.

"Most of our work in the build-up to this game had gone into stopping those three in the midfield. We had to close down Cipriani's space - we had to do a job because he has been on fire lately.

"I have no idea why the penalty try was given. It was very disappointing, pretty mystifying, because we were on top in the scrum all day and there was no way Wasps would have pushed us over the line from that position."

  • Wasps coach Ian McGeechan:
"We've probably got ourselves to blame. We made a lot of unforced errors.

"When you are away from home, you have to try to keep control of your own destiny more than we did today.

"This is not an easy place to come, and when we got the penalty try, I thought we had put ourselves in a position to win the game."
