Bristol saw off the challenge of Newcastle to record back-to-back Guinness Premiership home victories.
Tries from Samoan international Alfie To'oala and Brian O'Riordan helped give Bristol a 17-6 lead by the break.
Newcastle started the second half the stronger but Bristol's defence stood firm and Jason Strange extended the lead with his second penalty.
Matt Burke squeezed in for his side's only try, which he converted but another Strange penalty sealed the win.
Bristol head coach Richard Hill "You have to be pleased with back-to-back home wins but the performance was very poor again. It was a bit like England have done - winning ugly is what it is called.
"One or two individual performances were good but as a team at the moment we
are just not functioning properly, apart from the scrum, which has been the
highlight of our season.
"There is something not quite right but we haven't put our finger on it yet. We will have to think really hard about what we have to do to put it right."
Newcastle director of rugby John Fletcher "We started well and probably deserved something but we only have ourselves to
blame so many unforced errors and gave away too many penalties.
"We just put Bristol under enough pressure though we looked a threat when we
had the ball but we will have to look at why we were penalised so much,
especially at the scrum.
"The dressing room is absolutely devastated but we take away a bonus point which is some consolation I guess."
