Balshaw was a member of England's World Cup-winning squad |
Gloucester's Iain Balshaw has been named as Ben Cohen's replacement for England's tour of South Africa. Balshaw is promoted from the England Saxons to take over from Cohen, who withdrew from the squad and the World Cup as his wife is pregnant with twins.
"Iain was pretty close to being selected in the first place," said England head coach Brian Ashton.
"He has a lot of international experience and can cover wing and full-back."
Cohen's fellow 2003 Rugby World Cup winner Balshaw, who has won 29 England caps, said: "It's good to get the call-up and hopefully I'll be given the opportunity to press my claims for selection."
England fly out to South Africa on 15 May with the first Test taking place in Bloemfontein 11 days later and the second following in Pretoria on 2 June.
England Saxons coach Jim Mallinder said he would not be calling up any additional cover to his 37-man for the Churchill Cup (18 May-2 June).
