Bath's league convert Chev Walker tackles Phil Dowson | Newcastle (0) 12 Tries: Buist, Tait Cons: Flood
Bath (12) 20 Tries: Short, Bory, Berne Cons: Barkley Drop-goals: Berne
Bath withstood waves of Newcastle attacks as they finally secured their first away win in the Premiership on the final day of the regular season. Bath took an early lead when Peter Short was driven over from a line-out. A David Bory interception try made it 12-0 at half-time before Newcastle scored through replacement Andy Buist. Shaun Berne scored Bath's third try and although Mathew Tait went over for the Falcons Berne landed a late drop-goal to secure victory. Bath head coach Steve Meehan after their first away win in the league: "It's nice for the players to get the monkey off their backs - it's something we can build on and we can take it into the European Challenge Cup final. "Our defence today was superb but then we let Newcastle in for a try which often happens when you have defended well for a long spell. "We have a lot of tired players and they need a rest. It's three weeks to the final and we can take a break but we have arranged a warm-up game against Newbury to prepare." Newcastle boss John Fletcher after his side's five-month unbeaten home run came to an end: "That is the most frustrating and disappointing aspect of the day. "I've never been in a changing room so devastated by a result, but we made too many mistakes and they defended really well."
