Wasps strolled to a deserved win over a struggling Newcastle but were guilty of wasting a host of chances.

The Falcons started well and centres Mathew Tait and Jamie Noon both crossed to put Newcastle 12-3 ahead.

But Daniel Leo and Tom Voyce scored while sin-binned Falcons lock Jason Oakes was off the field and Tom Rees added another before half-time.

Wasps maintained their dominance after the break and tries from Paul Sackey and Josh Lewsey sealed victory.

The defeat continues the poor form of Newcastle, who have slumped to four defeats in the opening five games while Wasps now have four wins so far this season.

Newcastle started well and, after surviving early pressure, they got to grips with Wasps' rush defence to create tries for Tait and Noon.

But as Wasps began to find their momentum, so Newcastle started to slip off tackles while the sin-binning of Oakes for a stamp on Lawrence Dallaglio's ankle did not help their cause.

Oakes was the victim of an unpunished punch from Simon Shaw just before his yellow card but his stamp was obvious and Wasps took advantage through Leo and Voyce.

Rees added another just before the break to make the score 25-12 and the impressive number seven and the lively Waters carved their way through the Falcons defence after the break although both opportunities were wasted.

Newcastle were incredibly still in contention after a massive penalty from Toby Flood on 53 minutes but both sides were guilty of a host of mistakes as the second period lost its intensity.

The home side though, made sure of the bonus point when Sackey crossed in the corner with 13 minutes left to play.

Wasps prop Peter Bracken saw yellow late on which led to uncontested scrums but it did not make any difference as Lewsey touched down in the corner for the fifth try in the closing moments.

Wasps director of rugby Ian McGeechan:

"It was very good to play like that at home and also to have players back. I thought we played with a good tempo.

"The pleasing thing is we scored five tries and got a bonus point, which is very important as they're hard to come by in the Premiership.

"We have got a lot right. We want to keep building and improving."

Newcastle director of rugby John Fletcher on the first-half sin-binning of Jason Oakes:

"All sin-bins are crucial, especially away from home against a team like Wasps. They're hugely experienced and hugely powerful.

"In the second half we probably had as much ball as them but never really looked like hurting them.

"With 15 minutes to go we were just 10 points behind. I fancied us to win it."
